Conference Description
Building on the excitement and enthusiasm stoked by last year’s inaugural conference, the North America Levinas Society invites submissions of individual paper proposals and panel proposals for the second annual meeting and conference to be held June 10-12, 2007, at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. We will be organizing the conference around the broad theme of “Levinas and Community”; however, in an effort to draw together wide interests for this second annual conference, we are accepting proposals for papers and panels on any topic related to Levinas
We are especially excited to announce the attendance of some members of Levinas’ family at the 2007 conference. David Hansel, George Hansel, Joelle Hansel, and Simone (Levinas) Hansel will all deliver plenary presentations. We are additionally very pleased to announce that George Kunz, fitting with the theme of Levinas and community, will give a plenary on Levinas's inspiration for understanding psychopathology and psychotherapy; Professor Kunz’s work is proving integral to developing new ways of concretely applying Levinas’ work toward issues of ethics and social justice.
Conference Information
While general lodging information is available below, we would like to remind conference attendees that NALS has reserved rooms at three area hotels for conference participants
- Holiday Inn Select, located in downtown Lafayette
- Hilton Garden Inn, located in the Wabash River promenade of West Lafayette
- The University Inn, located off campus, just outside of town.
We have a greater number of rooms blocked at the Holiday Inn Select, and we encourage visiting participants to make their reservations there since it is conveniently located in downtown Lafayette amongst the town’s finer restaurants and pubs. Because much of the productive work at conferences occurs outside the confines of the conference program itself—over dinner and drinks—the Holiday Inn will offer convenient access to such local attractions, and they provide a shuttle service to Purdue’s campus, which is less than a mile away. The Holiday Inn Select features restaurant dining and an indoor pool on the third floor; additionally, there is a lovely, intimate, bar at the top of the Holiday Inn Select that affords a nice view of downtown Lafayette at night. You may contact the hotel 765-423-1000 or 1-800-423-1137.
The other hotels are quite accommodating as well, but we were able to reserve fewer rooms.
