Become a Member of the North American Levinas Society

We invite you to become a member of the North American Levinas Society.

As the North American Levinas Society develops, we hope to provide important resources and forums in order to foster more visible academic, social, and political work inspired by the work of Levinas. Such resources include, among other possibilities, the convening of annual meetings and conferences; the publication of a Society Bulletin with interviews, announcements, and reviews; and an up-to-date Society website featuring calls for papers, conference announcements, membership directory, class syllabi, and other relevant political and cultural events. Additionally, we hope to start a Society journal in the near future.

To sustain such Society activity, however, it will become necessary to begin charging Society dues in January, 2007.

While we will continue to offer, for free, general public access to certain Society resources, including the Society Newsletter emails and access to the Society website, other resources will be made available to members only. These resources will include, in addition to the Newsletter and website, (1) receiving the Society Bulletin, a more in-depth electronic publication which will include book reviews, interviews with prominent Levinasian scholars doing important work across the disciplines, and other important notifications; (2) access to a member directory for research collaboration and discussion; (3) voting rights at the General Business Meeting at the Society’s annual conference; and (4) early notification of Society announcements, publication opportunities, and other relevant Society events.

Membership dues will be in addition to conference registration fees, and we propose opening membership dues at the following:

  • Membership: $30 – US / $35 – CAD
  • Students: $15 – US / $17 – CAD

Those in soft currency areas who find it difficult to pay this amount in US currency will be encouraged to apply to the executive secretary for a special rate.

For now, we anticipate annual membership periods to cover January to January, which we hope to offer as soon as the coming new year. The first Society Bulletin will be made available to members in the Fall of 2007.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding the implementation of the new membership system, please contact Sol Neely at aporia at purdue.edu, or Michael R. Paradiso-Michau at secretary at levinas-society.org.
