Call for Proposals to Host the NALS Conference

The North American Levinas Society invites proposals to host the annual conference in the near term (the next three to five years). We are especially interested in soliciting proposals for the 2008 meeting, for whose planning we need to begin immediately. Although the format is open, proposals should address the institutional and funding support for the following:

  1. Infrastructure
    • Conference meeting rooms and presentation spaces
    • Audio-visual, technical, and computer support
    • Hosting and catering services
    • Housing availability (hotels, etc.)
    • Airport travel and local transportation
    • Conference coordinator(s), faculty contact(s), and administrative support
  2. Plenary Speakers and Special Guests
    • Travel and accommodations
    • Honoraria
  3. Timeline
    • Deadline for email submission: 15 July 2007
    • Decision will be made by the NALS Board of Directors by 1 September 2007
    • Please email your proposal to secretary@levinas-society.org by 15 July 2007

We welcome any additional information that the proposed hosting institution(s) would like to offer. We encourage cooperative proposals involving related schools, institutions, and organizations. We also are willing to discuss the conference theme with proposing institutions. We are also in discussion to hold a joint meeting in 2009 in Europe with David Hansel’s group, CIREL.

For comparison purpose, we estimate that the conference costs about $20,000.00 – about $12,000–$15,000 for infrastructure costs (if the conference were held in a private facility) and $7,000–$10,000 for plenary speakers). The infrastructure costs would vary according to your institution’s facility usage policies.
